The mind of a child...

We've been sick this week, and right now I'm the one hit the hardest.  So in an effort to get the healthier and therefore active-er set off my lap, I raided the closets for some distractions and found the dominoes.  This is a set of double-fifteens and hadn't been opened, so between opening the packages and playing with the actual dominoes I got a good 15 minutes of solitude.  Loud solitude, but beggars can't be choosers.

Security!

There's this fun little game that I accidentally created called Mommy Slide.  This consists of a child sitting on my lap then "sliding" down my legs onto the floor.  Works great for N!  Not so well for Z...he only slides about 2 inches before his feet hit the ground.  That never stops him, though, so it's a popular game.

Z's pictures

Here are some of the pictures that Z took that day with his camera.

More Z-isms

Raid-lo-lo = Radio
Chock-it = Chocolate
Snoozy = Smoothie
Choc-o-lit Snoozy = Tropical Smoothie (and yet chocolate is still chock-it...baffling)
Bat-er-ly = Battery
pun-key-yown = provolone
meh-sid-uhr tape  = measuring tape
scoof driver = screwdriver

and a long list of things that are supposed to be sn or sp but instead are st: stoon (spoon), stack (snack), stow (snow), stinach (spinach), stake (snake), stail (snail), stade (spade), I'm sure there are more

Train 'em young

Grammy was here today for a visit, which always opens up a few more possibilities for entertaining the young ones.  That extra pair of hands makes all the difference!

Silver lining

Yesterday morning was a bit of a struggle for me.  I had gotten to bed later than usual and slept rather poorly.  N, having a sixth sense for when Mommy really needs the extra sleep, got up at 6. Just for context, he rarely gets up before 7:30.

Busted

The other day, I was cleaning up the kitchen and came across a couple of toys.  Both of the boys seem to have this irresistible urge to transport small objects from the living room to the kitchen, likely to aid the cats in trying to kill me.

Growing like weeds

Yesterday I took the boys in to see the doctor.  N needed his 1 year checkup (complete with 3 shots and a blood draw, poor thing!), and Z needed to have blood drawn to check for celiac antibodies since there has got to be SOMETHING going on with that child.

Early bird

The boys and I have lately been participating in a weekly "Girls' Night" with my best friend and her family (Mom, daughter R, sister, & sister's best friend).  Yes, I'm aware that my sons are not girls. Under 5 doesn't count.  Most of the time I only bring one of them with me...it's a little easier on me to only have one, and it turns into quality one-on-one time with Daddy for the one that doesn't come. Win-win situation all around.

T-O

Now that Z is plenty old enough to get into mischief, we've had to begin disciplinary actions.

green light on playstation

Z is (and has been for awhile) fascinated by the lights on electronic devices.  He could sit there and turn things on and off for hours, just to see the lights change.  My parents have a nightlight in the hallway that changes color every few seconds, and that thing was a Z magnet.  Unfortunately that hallway is on the other side of a baby gate and requires adult assistance, which he's not so fond of.

Well duh!

Around here we're big fans of Sandra Boyton's books.  I think we have pretty much all of them (thanks Grammy!).  Z knows quite a few of them by heart and I have have several adorable videos of him reading them to himself or just reciting them from memory to Mr Penguin.  And I have to admit, I know most of them by heart too.

Going Bananas

One morning (about a month ago I guess!) N got up rather earlier than normal, which then meant that his first nap was earlier than normal.  None of us had had breakfast yet (we do meals on demand here, not on schedule), but N was definitely ready to go back to bed.  No big deal, Z was playing with his toys in the living room by himself and didn't seem to mind when I went back to give N his bottle and put him down.

Choke hold

N is fond of cheerios.  Very fond.  So fond, in fact, that he occasionally puts more in his mouth than he can actually manage to ingest safely, given that he still only has two bottom teeth.  Whenever he coughs on his cheerios I generally say, "You're not supposed to choke on them, silly!" while making sure he clears his throat.

Look who's talking

Z's language skills took awhile to develop.  It's mostly been within the last year or so that he's really started to use his vocal cords for something other than grunting and screaming.

Everything's a competition

N seems determined to outdo his brother in just about everything he can possibly do.  He "cooked" longer, was born bigger, eats more, grows faster, etc etc.  I'd have to go back and see who got the first tooth sooner and all that, but he probably got that sooner, too, knowing him.  So I guess I shouldn't really be surprised that yesterday he decided to beat out his brother in yet another area...eye injuries requiring a trip to the emergency room.

Everybody wants to be a cat...

When I was young (between 5 and 10, maybe?) I had a thing about cats.  I really liked them, I wanted to have one, and really, I wanted to be one.  Cats have it MADE. There were at least two times where I KNOW that I "walked" around on all fours meowing...in public.  On purpose.  And let me tell you, an (old) asphalt parking lot is rather hard on the "paws," especially if you're wearing a skirt.

Playing catch-up

It's been a busy couple of weeks since Z came home from the hospital, which has led to a dry spell here on the blog.  Pretty much as soon as we had Z all settled and feeling better, we realized that our elder statescat Earl was NOT looking good.  He'd been losing weight, being pretty lethargic, nothing too alarming by itself but when it all added together we decided we should take him to the vet.  $1400+ later, we have a diabetic cat on several medications, daily insulin shots, and dietary restrictions.  We almost lost him, but he's getting back to normal for the most part.  Needless to say, that's been pretty stressful.  On top of that were a bunch of events taking place, a couple that were photography-heavy and needed to take precedence over the blog when it came to my computer time.
